Whatever the Academic Interest, Students Can Still Enjoy the Art of Music

No matter the academic interest, many Georgetown College students also enjoy making music. Whether it’s playing an instrument or singing, exploring pop, classical, or everything in between, the Department of Music provides opportunities for students to continue their love for the art form while pursuing a degree from among a broad spectrum of over 50 majors and minors.
Students who have enjoyed playing in a high school band may continue that meaningful experience in the Georgetown College band, for example, with the permission of the director, music professor Dr. Peter LaRue. This large instrumental ensemble, often referred to as ‘Band Scholars,’ performs on campus and throughout the region. The Fighting Tiger Grrr…Pep Band inspires at home football and basketball games while the Symphonic Band presents formal concerts on campus each semester.
In celebration of the 173rd year of bands at Georgetown College, the Tiger Symphonic Band will present its fall anniversary concert on Monday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. in John L. Hill Chapel on campus. The performance is to include works by Elgar, Hosay, King, Mozart, Respighi, and Romeyn. Also the playing of the Star Spangled Banner and the GC Alma Mater. In keeping with Tiger bands dedication to local community service, admission to this concert is a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the AMEN House for distribution during the holidays to the less fortunate in the City of Georgetown and Scott County.
Those who enjoy singing will find an outlet for their talent in either the chorale or gospel choir – perhaps both. Membership is open to all students. The chorale’s repertoire includes works from the Renaissance through the 21st Century. The gospel choir ensemble focuses on traditional and contemporary gospel music, hymns, anthems, and spirituals. Numerous performances are presented each semester, both on- and off-campus.
This fall’s concert by the chorale is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. in John L. Hill Chapel.
The Department of Music also has a variety of course offerings providing a wealth of information and experiences about music. Electives might include “Tunes for Twangers – A History of Country Music,” “History of Rock Music,” and a study of “Film Music: From Psycho to Star Wars. And more.” Elementary education majors may also explore a course in “Public School Music.”
