GC Phi Beta Lambda Students Shine on National Stage

Submitted on July 17, 2020

Georgetown College students continue to show what it means to earn a championship-level education of the heart and mind. After last year’s national championship in Forensic Accounting, GC students again proved their mettle on the national stage this summer with an incredible showing at the Phi Beta Lambda National Awards Program at this year’s National Leadership Experience.

All Georgetown College students who competed achieved a top ten finish at the event. First, Sydne Evans and Gwen House took third place in Accounting Analysis and Decision-Making. Kendal Warren earned third place in Marketing Analysis and Decision-Making. Preston Crump, Colson Wilson, and Kain Borman won fourth place in Business Ethics. Finally, Morgan Bohannon took tenth place in Cost Accounting.

So what accounts for this recent success at the national level? “Amazing mentors,” said current PBL President at GC, Sydne Evans. “Dr. Takacs and Mrs. Madden spent hours studying with us, always offering encouraging words. I know that I could not have achieved any type of success without them pushing me.”

A fourth place winner in Business Ethics, Preston Crump, said, “I think PBL's success stems from our amazing advisors and awesome leadership team. Throughout the semester leading up to the conference, our advisors helped us find a competitive event that fit our strengths and interests and, then, helped us secure study and reference materials for those events. Our leadership team made up of GC students has also been very active in our success by encouraging each member. Overall, PBL has a great dynamic that inspires individual success but helps in the right ways when a member encounters a problem.”

Phi Beta Lambda is a key organization in preparing students for their future careers, whether that’s in the business world or not. “PBL offers students a safe avenue to step out of their field of study,” said Crump. “Being a Biology major, I did not have much experience with business or accounting classes. However, since PBL offers a wide range of competitive events, I was able to find a competitive event that fit my interests. Overall, PBL builds teamwork and leadership skills that translate well into all careers after GC.”

Of course, being part of Phi Beta Lambda is a big commitment for students, but it’s an organization these students are incredibly proud to be part of. “ I love being part of Phi Beta Lambda at GC because it is competitive, intriguing, fun, and a great resumé booster,” said Colson Wilson. “These are all the things I look for in an extra-curricular activity and that’s offered right here at GC.”

“I’m a part of Phi Beta Lambda at GC because it gave me a place to meet new people, build amazing friendship, compete in what I love, and become a stronger leader,” said Gwen House. This organization has become a family and will always be a big part of my life because it helped me find my passion for my future career.”

So what’s next for Phi Beta Lambda at GC? “We have a strong team,” said House. I personally can’t wait to see what we accomplish this year.” Neither can the rest of the Georgetown College community.
