GC Football Players Help Launch Winter Term Review Course

Submitted on December 4, 2020

Georgetown College student-athletes are dedicated both on the field of play and in the classroom. Two Tiger football players recently showcased this dedication to success in helping brainstorm new ways to serve students interested in taking the MCAT and attending medical school.

Earlier this fall, football players Jonathon Bothen and Ryan Stump approached college officials and expressed the potential need for a course specifically designed to help students retain crucial core knowledge related to the MCAT exam, especially for students who took Organic Chemistry in the first fall subsession. The subsession format implemented this fall shifted the schedule, which would allow for a five week winter term course that could meet these goals.

“The shifting of the academic calendar that was necessary as a result of the pandemic had already led us to create a new five-week Winter Term for this year only,” said Provost and Dean of the College, Dr. Rosemary Allen. “As a result there was a perfect opportunity to add this Special Topics class.”

Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Innocent Demshemino, who taught Organic Chemistry in the fall, took on the challenge of designing a fully online five-week review course. Georgetown College is offering this course free to all students who took Organic Chemistry in the first subsession this fall as a way to review for the MCAT. Eighteen students have registered for the course, and the college plans on a similar course offering after the spring term.

“I applaud the principled and diplomatic self-advocacy that Ryan Stump and Jonathon Bothen showed,” said Dr. Allen. “They expressed their gratitude to their faculty for their willingness to work so intensively during the challenges of the subsessions, and they were advocating for their fellow students and their faculty as well as themselves in asking the College to consider the difficulties of intense lab sciences under this semester structure.”

This student-first approach is what GC is all about, and these student-athletes truly epitomize the forward-thinking and dedicated approach of the student body at Georgetown College.
